“Caddell Five: Camping”

Saturday, November 7th, 2009

This brief camping post asks the age-old question, “What 6 year old doesn’t need to know how to play blackjack?”

Well, you gotta do what you gotta do when it rains for your entire trip, right?

“The Happy Rock: 13 Simple Tips to Make Tent Camping Easier & More Fun”

Saturday, August 29th, 2009

I really like the tone of this post– attitude is listed first and last, and as you know, I’ve always said that the difference between a good camping trip and a bad one is a good attitude.

“Yrsa Viking: Camping in Ireland”

Monday, August 17th, 2009

This is a post by the sister of the lady who posted this: “Dot-Com: Camping in Ireland”– I guess you could call it its sister post! It’s interesting to have two perspectives on the same trip, and actually this post contains more detail. I enjoyed going back and rereading the post I commented on before and then reading this one. I’d camp with these two sisters, if they invited me.

“The surest way to end a drought is to go camping!!”

“Galumphing: Scout and Jem Go Camping”

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

This short and sweet post is an object lesson to those of us who think we’ve failed in our attempts at the perfect family tent camping trip because something goes wrong, in this case, the weather:

“It rained nearly the entire time,” Jeremy writes; “the tent was leaky, and the site was covered with muck, water, and mucky water.

While trapped in our tent on the first day, my sweat-pea said, ‘I really like camping with Papa.’ ”

See? Our kids want the closeness they experience with us out of our camping trips, not sheer perfection. Jeremy’s daughter’s favorite part of the trip? Jumping in puddles. Can’t get that without a little torrential rain, folks!

“Daily Smiles: Countdown to Camping”

Saturday, August 8th, 2009

In this post, Stephanie recounts the horrible weather they encountered on their camping trip last year, and is obviously concerned about what awaits them this year. But the good thing is that they’re still game this year, with an additional child (making 5), and going further afield from their home. And, as the two pictures in a follow-up post attest, things went very well for them this time around.

Family tent campers are a hardy lot!

“Half an Acre: How Not to Go Camping in Wales”

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

Is this a recipe for disaster? “Take three friends,” Anna instructs us, “eight assorted children, nine stuffed toys, one non-plussed dog and three tents. Put them all in a field on the Welsh coast. Add wind, rain and a severe weather warning….”

Ah, camping! Does it really count if it doesn’t rain at least once? I don’t know, but it’s got to count for something if it rains continuously! This blog post is a testament to the children’s resourcefulness, if nothing else.

(OF COURSE, despite the possibility of weather like this, Wales is on my Dream UK Family Tent Camping Trip itinerary.)

“Dot-Com: Camping in Ireland”

Saturday, August 1st, 2009

Okay, so now Doolin Cave is on my Dream U.K. Family Tent Camping Trip itinerary. As soggy as this camp out was, it still sounds delightful to me.

I backpacked around Ireland when I was an undergrad but I didn’t camp, I stayed in youth hostels. I need to get back there before I’m eligible for elder hostels!

“Sara’s Lounge: It Was a Wet and Rainy Weekend”

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

But they made the best of it. My favorite part of this post was the “nice lady” talking to Ana, the dog, in the morning. Rain and such helpful fellow campers? I do wish them better luck on their next tent camping trip!

“Sassy Buster: Camping”

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

Camping has given Sassy Buster a potential career option: “The mister and I can end droughts when we camp,” she writes. “Desert hasn’t seen precipitation in 6 months? Oh, well, we’ll plan a trip and pitch a tent and fix that drought for you. Northern Minnesota facing drought? We’ll roll out our sleeping bags and produce 3 inches of rain in an hour. No worries.”

Read her post here, and don’t forget to peruse the comments. They add a lot of enjoyment sometimes.
