October 24th is “Make a Difference Day,” and I can’t help but mention our tent raffle again. $1.00 MIGHT get you a brand new Coleman Sundome 4-person tent, and WILL bring you the joy of helping to make a difference in the life of a pediatric cancer patient. Goodness, what else can you get for a dollar, a fattening greasy hamburger somewhere? KOA Care Camps will put that money to much better use, getting a child with cancer away from their frightening, painful routine and into the experience of camping, something so many of us take for granted. Go to our sister site, Picture Camping Goods and Gear, to register and enter the raffle, and God bless you for it!

Make a Difference Day
Saturday, October 24th, 2009Raffle for KOA Care Camps– a Brand New Tent!
Monday, October 19th, 2009Hello, Dear Reader. I hope you’re doing well! We are, and to spread the love we’re raffling off a Coleman Sundome 4-person tent to benefit KOA Care Camps for children with cancer. It’s a program run all across the U.S. and Canada that gives pediatric cancer patients a chance to go camping, leaving their normal worries and concerns behind for a week, and we’re behind it 100%!
Raffle tickets are only $1.00, and you can enter the raffle at our sister site, http://www.picturecamping-goods-and-gear.com. You’ll have to register at that site to get to the restricted-access Paypal page (that’s so we know how to contact the winner!).
Go on and enter– if you’re new to camping, winning this tent will give you years of family enjoyment. Even if you have five tents already, it would make a stunning present this holiday season, and you’d be helping a most worthy cause in the process. OR, you can replace one of your older tents, donating IT to your local homeless shelter, and upgrade your tent collection (we know you’re out there!!).
What else can you get with a dollar? Nothing that can compete with the joy of knowing you’re easing the burden of a child with cancer, I know that! Be a blessing to someone else today, and enter the raffle. Thank you!
“Camping Recipe: Hobo Pizza”
Monday, September 21st, 2009This recipe for Hobo Pizza shows just how easy it is to cook with a pie iron– and you can click on “KOA Care Camps,” above, for a chance to win one! If you donate just $5.00, you WILL get the joy of helping kids with cancer, and you COULD wind up with a pie iron and a cookbook. Where’s the downside? Thank you in advance!
A Plea for Donations to KOA Care Camps
Saturday, September 12th, 2009Is this begging? I feel more dignified than that, but it may be, and I’m not too proud to do so. KOA Care Camps has a fantastic program for children with life-altering (and THREATENING) cancer, and Mr. Richard O’Russa of Rome Industries has been incredibly generous by donating the dozen pie irons and pie iron cookbooks we’re raffling off, so if I have to beg to get a response, so be it.
In case you’re unfamiliar with them, this is a pie iron:

They’re a time-honored way to cook over the coals, my friends, and you can make a tremendous variety of good things in them, as the cookbooks clearly demonstrate. They retail for anywhere from $10.95-$16.95, so even if you’re cconcentrating on what you could get for your $5.00, it’s at least half off (plus there’s the cookbook).
But I encourage you to think of yourself in this, because the joy you’ll get from knowing you’ve helped to brighten the hideous daily grind of a pediatric cancer patient is a tremendous return on your $5.00, whether you win one of the raffled sets or not. For the price of a latte you could spred a little joy in the world, so what are you waiting for? Click on “KOA Care Camps” on the horizontal menu bar above, enter your first name and email address so we can get in touch with you if you win, and you’ll be directed to KOA Care Camps’ pay pal button.
And thank you, from the bottom of my heart.
Yours,
Jean B. in SC
This Is My 500th Post!
Monday, September 7th, 2009This is my 500th post, in just five months, and pretty much all I can say is, “This is my 5ooth post!”
Nah– I can manage more than that!
First of all, I expect my posting to slow a bit for two reasons. First, school is back in session, which means I’m back to teaching, and I have yet to figure out how to do two things at once (no multi-tasker here!). Second, much of the country puts camping to bed after Labor Day, and there will be fewer quality posts to report to you. However, all is not lost– there are 499 posts in our archives here, and many of them are real gems, so I encourage you to explore “previous posts” when you need a camping fix.
Now I’d like to invite you to join our Ning group, Family Tent Campers. Just click on “Ning” on the horizontal menu bar, above. One of my goals for this website is to foster community among family tent campers, so there you go!
I’d also like to ask you, from the bottom of my heart, to donate $5.00 to KOA Care Camps for children with cancer. Read my post, National Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month, for more information about our fund-raising drive on their behalf. I know raffle tickets are usually only about a dollar, but this is such a worthy cause, and $5.00 is ultimately so small an amount, that I feel confident in asking it. Think of it as a paltry $5.00 donation, with the added benefit of possibly winning one of the dozen pie iron & cookbook sets that are available, and the definite benefit of enriching the life of a child suffering with cancer.
Thank you so much for reading me! I look forward to my future posts as much as I’ve enjoyed these first 500!
Thanks again,
Jean B. in SC
National Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month
Sunday, September 6th, 2009September is also National Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month, and here at Picture Camping we’re commemorating that by having a raffle of pie irons and pie iron cookbooks to benefit KOA Care Camps for children with cancer. The Care Camps give pediatric cancer patients a chance to have fun and to stop concentrating on their disease, but because they still require constant medical treatment, costs can be extremely high for a week of enjoyment.
Mr. Richard O”Russa of Rome Industries has been so generous as to donate twelve sets of pie irons and pie iron cookbooks to us to raffle off. The price per ticket is $5.00, a mere pittance for an individual, but each drop in the bucket contributes to what I hope will be an impressive total contribution to KOA’s Care Camp program. Of course, the $5.00 is tax deductible. Please consider skipping a latte or a burger some day this month to donate $5.00 to this worthy cause, and you will automatically be in the running for one of the dozen pie iron sets.
I know you’re all good people who want the world to be a better place for those in need. This is a small way to help make that happen for precious children who are undergoing a tremendous ordeal. Thank you for your help! Just click on KOA Care Camps on the horizontal menu bar, above, enter your first name and email address, and you’ll be taken to KOA Care Camps’ paypal account.
Thank you again!
RotiSir & KOA’s Care Camps Reminder
Monday, July 6th, 2009The RotiSir portable rotisserie and hibachi grill– perfect for camping trips!– is going to be marketed at $100.00 plus $15.00 S&H, but if you buy right now, before the first shipment of them hits the U.S., you’ll get it for only $59.95 plus $15.00 S&H.
That’s right– prepaid preorders amount to only $74.95 versus $115.00, a savings of $40.05! The manufacturer gave me plenty of leeway to mark these up so I could profit from them, but I’m not going to make a dime– my goal is to sell twenty, because at that point I’ll be given one for free which I’ll raffle off to benefit KOA’s Care Camps for children with cancer.
There’s a video and more information about these rotisseries in the Shopping section of this site. Firefox users, roll your mouse over “Shopping,” then “Camping Accessories,” then “Cooking & Eating,” and you’ll see the RotiSir page in the drop-down menu; I.E. users, for some reason the drop-down menu doesn’t work smoothly, so click on “Shopping” and wait for a second to get it, then click through the above-mentioned categories. You’ll see the “RotiSir” option and can buy securely through PayPal on that page.
I’m really excited about this, Dear Reader! I’ve known since I started this website that I wanted to arrange some way to give to a camping-related charity, and this is it (hopefully the first campaign of many). You’ll wind up with the coolest new addition to your camping kitchen out there, and you’ll be participating in a great cause in the process.
I can already smell the roast I’m going to cook when I get mine… smell it? Isn’t that delicious? Yum…
