“Hodgeman’s Thoughts on the Great Outdoors: Camping at Octopus Lake”

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

Hodgeman writes beautifully, and this is a poignant post about dads and sons camping together. It’s autumnal on many different levels.

“Paddling.Net: Taking the Kids Camping”

Sunday, September 13th, 2009

Taking the Kids Camping by Kevin Callan is a great article for any parent on the fence about doing so– and we’re talking backpacking and canoeing here, not car camping. Read this for reassurance that it’s not only possible, but rewarding.

National Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month

Sunday, September 6th, 2009

September is also National Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month, and here at Picture Camping we’re commemorating that by having a raffle of pie irons and pie iron cookbooks to benefit KOA Care Camps for children with cancer. The Care Camps give pediatric cancer patients a chance to have fun and to stop concentrating on their disease, but because they still require constant medical treatment, costs can be extremely high for a week of enjoyment.

Mr. Richard O”Russa of Rome Industries has been so generous as to donate twelve sets of pie irons and pie iron cookbooks to us to raffle off. The price per ticket is $5.00, a mere pittance for an individual, but each drop in the bucket contributes to what I hope will be an impressive total contribution to KOA’s Care Camp program. Of course, the $5.00 is tax deductible. Please consider skipping a latte or a burger some day this month to donate $5.00 to this worthy cause, and you will automatically be in the running for one of the dozen pie iron sets.

I know you’re all good people who want the world to be a better place for those in need. This is a small way to help make that happen for precious children who are undergoing a tremendous ordeal. Thank you for your help! Just click on KOA Care Camps on the horizontal menu bar, above, enter your first name and email address, and you’ll be taken to KOA Care Camps’ paypal account.

Thank you again!

“teachersays: Camping with Grandsons”

Sunday, September 6th, 2009

What wonderful family memories these grandsons will have for life! Furthermore, I hope I look as good when I’m a grandma.

“A Mom’s View of ADHD: 10 Things I Learned Camping with my ADHD Son”

Saturday, September 5th, 2009

This is a very thoughtful and thought-provoking list. I know, as a teacher, that getting ADHD students outdoors somehow (despite recess being a thing of the past in so many schools these days) tends to help them to let off steam and prepare to concentrate a little better. I’m blessed now as a teacher in a small, exclusive private school where I can go outside, go on an impromptu field trip, whatever the students need at the moment.

But, ADHD aside, this post is a testament to the wonders of camping with children.

Keep Your Kids Close…

Saturday, September 5th, 2009

This article highlights the need to keep a close eye on our children while we’re camping, which we all know; but accidents happen. All I can say is, “Good dog!”

“There’s No Place Like Home: A Camping with Kiddos Update”

Thursday, August 27th, 2009

In this post, the author describes camping as “kind of like pregnancy and labor. Not fun, but the end result is satisfying.” Hmmm– yep, I’ve been on camp outs like that. It gets better.

“Heather on Her Travels: A Fairy Tale of Camping in Mid-Wales”

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

This is a lovely little tale of a young princess and her princess friends who are granted their wish to go camping. No poisoned apples or demanding frogs here, just good old fashioned camping fun. (Yes, their camping locale is now on my UK Dream Camping Trip itinerary.)
