Last Weekend’s Camping Trip

Saturday, November 21st, 2009

I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to post about our last camp out. It was with the Boy Scouts, not a family outing, and it was a combined Webeloree/Camporee– which simply means there were LOTS of Scouts running around. It was not peaceful.

It was, however, impressive. I love seeing a huge, empty field transformed into a tent city in a matter of minutes, literally. Our troop really has its act together, and we camped along with our pack, so there were lots of us crammed into one site. As you know by now, I’m a tentaholic, and I sure got my fix last weekend. In fact, in addition to all the tents I saw/helped with, I got to hear about a large canvas M*A*S*H army tent for sale locally that I absolutely salivated over, at least until my husband put his foot down with a resounding, “NO!”

There was one SuperMom there, Julie, who dealt with four tents in the time it took us to handle our one. Next time I’ll move quicker and help her (not that she needed it)– though I did manage to help her load her car at the end. One of her sons was the only casualty of the event; he ended up sick and his dad had to take him home.

It was very cold, for me (you’d scorn me if I actually mentioned the temperature, so I’ll skip that). I dealt with it okay except for my bathroom (port-a-potty) runs in the middle of the night, which sent me into paroxisms of teeth-chattering for twenty minutes or so afterward. Also, due to the fact that three hundred-some scouts were registered and over six hundred showed up, there were far too few johns and they got exceedingly gross fast. Eeeeew– I’ll spare you further description.

We made a killer beef stew in a dutch oven, and that was the highlight of our cuisine. Most of all, I enjoyed our troop’s/pack’s campfire on Saturday evening. It warmed me body and soul to spend that time with the kids and the other parents, enjoying s’mores and smalltalk. My son says that that campfire was also his favorite part of the weekend.

I plan to camp with the troop in January this year, but will lay in a supply of long johns and thick sweats beforehand. We are also (finally!) going to use the portable handicapped toilet from my great-grandmother in our tent, with wag bags. I’ve been trying to get the hubster to agree to that for some time now– I guess my teeth-chattering got to him!

All in all, it was fun. I do look forward to the next time we can camp as a family, though. It’ll be a lot quieter and I’ll manage to draw from nature, etc., as I like to do while camping.

“South County Ciclista: Labor Day Camping”

This is the pleasant story of a dad taking his three children camping. No horror stories here, just good, clean (er, there was dirt involved) fun.

“Bakosphere: Noisy Drunks from Bakersfield Ruin Camping Trip”

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

Most of the comments on this brief post take exception to the “from Bakersfield” part of the original Blogger’s complaint, a woman named Kate Gale. A few concentrate on the real issue, the “noisy drunks” part. A link to Kate’s original post is provided, and it seems her trip really was ruined by drunks. Many of us have had that happen; you, Dear Reader, being family tent campersĀ  (my demographic, so to speak) are generally looking for a little R & R when you camp, not a drunken orgy. I keep up with thousands of Twitter tweets on camping, in addition to reading through thousands of blog posts, and sometimes I get incensed just reading people’s plans for getting plastered– because I know they’re going to be camping in the spot next to you!

Anyway, the controversy Kate Gale stirred up results from her specifying that these particular party-hearty campers were from Bakersfield, which got a lot of backs up, and brought the pro-Bakersfield crowd to their feet; I’m here to say it doesn’t matter where they’re from, because the conflict between family-oriented campers and others is played out everywhere. It’s too bad we don’t have delineated spaces for each demograpic, or something– but when you get right down to it, where I’m from, there are laws against public drunkenness, and none against the quiet enjoyment of nature.

“Barking Moonbat Early Warning System: Like Camping, Only Bigger”

Saturday, September 12th, 2009

Although this is a post about living out of boxes mid-move, I really enjoyed the reminiscing about the author’s childhood family tent camping trips– the efficiency! The esprit de corps! They had the whole shebang down to a science– the only way to go.

Ill Call Baila: The Camping Post, At Last”

Saturday, September 12th, 2009

“Here’s the deal,” Baila says, “on camping: it’s fun. Really.”

I like the post and its author already! Then Baila proceeds to give us a detailed account of the fun– and all the prep for it. It’s true that camping can be labor-intensive (”in-TENTS-ive”– get it??); the trick is to make all the prep fun as well. I’ll say it again: it’s all in the attitude, and Baila and her crew have a great one.

“Kitchen Stewardship: Finer Things Friday: Family Camping Trip”

The pictures and their captions in this lovely post absolutely relaxed me, they are so pleasant. As funny as the “camping fail” posts can be, my favorite posts will always be those like this one, which showcase a successful, enjoyable family tent camping trip for all concerned. Poke around Katie’s site, too– she has interesting camping recipes in several posts.

About the author’s fist camp out in seven years, this post is a relaxed look at what was clearly a very relaxing time for all involved– just what a family tent camping trip should be.

“Musings for the Potting Shed: Family Camping”

I’m always on the lookout for ways to improve our camping experiences, and this post gave me a great idea: have someone else set our tent up before we get to the campsite! All joking aside, it sounds like they all had a great time.

Heather and her extended family take tent camping trips to the same campground time after time, with the bonus of a nearby gas station that serves ice cream cones. This is a photo-filled post about their 2009 camping excursion.

“Outside– Looking In: Two Go Camping”

In his post, a grandma takes her two grandsons tent camping, and hopes it instills in them a love of nature and the outdoors that will last a lifetime. Amen to that!
