“Clemsongirl and the Coach: So Very Thankful”

Friday, November 27th, 2009

In this brief post, the author observes a man camping out for Black Friday deals on camping gear and it gets her giggling.

Actually, I get the deep-seated need to get deals on camping equipment– though as an internet marketer (see our online affiliate store, http://www.picturecamping-goods-and-gear.com) it strikes me as unnecessary to worry about brick-and-mortar stores! And when comes to people actually camping out in tents in front of stores over Thanksgiving, I wonder two things: first, what do they say to family and friends who might expect to see them for the traditional Thanksgiving meal– “Sorry, the discounts at the mall are more important than you…”– and second, what do they do with all their gear when the doors open and people start to trample each other to get in? I read about a man camping out from Wednesday the 25th til o’dark-thirty on Friday morning in front of  Best Buy and he had a generator with him– now you know you can’t schlep that thing through the store. I guess you’d have to have troops with you to stay in the tent and (be trampled) guard everything while you did some shopping.

Just skip Black Friday and go with Cyber Monday! ;)

“jsignal.com: Camping in Autumn”

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

This post includes a slide show of photos, some of which are really beautiful (like the one of the raindrops on the spider’s web) and some of which are interesting (like the one of the walking stick on one of the seminarian’s arms). I love photos from a camping trip!

“The Professional Hobo: Camping with Koalas at Cape Otway”

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

Ever since I read this post, I’ve been imagining Koala mating calls and what they must sound like. “If you don’t know what you’re listening to when koalas are feeling amorous,” the author writes, “you might think calling a priest is in order; their low guttural growls and high pitched screams sound other-worldly and so far from anything a cute little koala could muster. Right? Nah. When koalas are looking to get it on, you know about it.”

I’ve never even seen a koala in a zoo! How cool to camp amongst them, especially with some fourteen eighth-graders. (I’m a middle school teacher and would love to camp with some of my babies.) I really enjoyed living vicariously through this Aussie post. It even includes a lovely little video.

“James & Jessica Dunning: Camping in Naivasha…”

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

This blog post’s author writes that “there is something surreal about hiking through herds of giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, gazelles, and being within 25 ft. of a herd of 20-30 hippos taking their morning swim.” I bet!

I want to tent camp in Kenya…

Just a Picture I Enjoyed…

Saturday, October 24th, 2009

Dear Reader, I’ll break it to you before I do to the hubby: from now on, my vehicle, my tent, and all my gear must match. That is all.

“Patchwork Reflections: Holiday Camping”

Monday, September 28th, 2009

Crisp, beautiful photos accompany the brief text here about  a camping trip to Unicoi State Park in northwest Georgia. I’ve stayed there, too, although many years ago, and enjoyed every second of it, including a side trip to the tourist trap of Helen, GA (years ago the town decided to turn itself into a Bavarian village to attract traffic, and it’s worked). Anna Ruby Falls are gorgeous, and worth the hike, and the lake is serene. I enjoyed this post and the memories it brought back!

National Preparedness Month

September is National Preparedness Month, so… know before you go. This is a good, succinct primer on camping safety.

“Combustible Turnip: Special Edition #5: Camping”

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

This post is a bit of a departure from our regular fare, because it’s an essay about camping. No pictures here, Dear Reader, but mental ones– and plenty of those, as the author takes us from his first car camping trips with his family of seven through to his current lone (by choice) backpacking trips. It is well worth reading in its own right, and a nice change of pace from the captions-only reading we tend to encounter here at Picture Camping.

“More Than Living: Camping Dining a la Carte”

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

Don’t let the weird sludge in the cauldron in the header picture scare you off; there are two delicious-sounding (and looking!) camping recipes in the text of this post.

Family Tent Camping Group on Ning

Monday, July 27th, 2009

We have a social network all our own on Ning, called Family Tent Campers (really put a lot of imagination into that, huh?). Come join up– you can post camping pics and videos there, post about your camping adventures, and have your own camping blog. Also, once we have decent membership, there’ll be forums, including ratings on campgrounds, camping-themed scrapbooking (with swaps), campfire cuisine, and whatever else people want. It’ll take awhile to get established, naturally– but that’ll never happen without YOUR participation! We need YOU and your enthusiasm to get the ball rolling!!

I can’t wait to meet you…
