“Floriduh: Thief Steals a Toilet and Camping Gear…”

Friday, November 27th, 2009

I genuinely LOL’ed when I read this very short article. Richard has agreed to my tent-potty arrangements just in time to save me from a similar life of crime, I think.

Last Weekend’s Camping Trip

Saturday, November 21st, 2009

I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to post about our last camp out. It was with the Boy Scouts, not a family outing, and it was a combined Webeloree/Camporee– which simply means there were LOTS of Scouts running around. It was not peaceful.

It was, however, impressive. I love seeing a huge, empty field transformed into a tent city in a matter of minutes, literally. Our troop really has its act together, and we camped along with our pack, so there were lots of us crammed into one site. As you know by now, I’m a tentaholic, and I sure got my fix last weekend. In fact, in addition to all the tents I saw/helped with, I got to hear about a large canvas M*A*S*H army tent for sale locally that I absolutely salivated over, at least until my husband put his foot down with a resounding, “NO!”

There was one SuperMom there, Julie, who dealt with four tents in the time it took us to handle our one. Next time I’ll move quicker and help her (not that she needed it)– though I did manage to help her load her car at the end. One of her sons was the only casualty of the event; he ended up sick and his dad had to take him home.

It was very cold, for me (you’d scorn me if I actually mentioned the temperature, so I’ll skip that). I dealt with it okay except for my bathroom (port-a-potty) runs in the middle of the night, which sent me into paroxisms of teeth-chattering for twenty minutes or so afterward. Also, due to the fact that three hundred-some scouts were registered and over six hundred showed up, there were far too few johns and they got exceedingly gross fast. Eeeeew– I’ll spare you further description.

We made a killer beef stew in a dutch oven, and that was the highlight of our cuisine. Most of all, I enjoyed our troop’s/pack’s campfire on Saturday evening. It warmed me body and soul to spend that time with the kids and the other parents, enjoying s’mores and smalltalk. My son says that that campfire was also his favorite part of the weekend.

I plan to camp with the troop in January this year, but will lay in a supply of long johns and thick sweats beforehand. We are also (finally!) going to use the portable handicapped toilet from my great-grandmother in our tent, with wag bags. I’ve been trying to get the hubster to agree to that for some time now– I guess my teeth-chattering got to him!

All in all, it was fun. I do look forward to the next time we can camp as a family, though. It’ll be a lot quieter and I’ll manage to draw from nature, etc., as I like to do while camping.

“Woodcraft and Camping” by Nessmuck

Saturday, November 21st, 2009

This 66-page ebook, originally published in 1920, is a fascinating read. Nessmuck traveled light, without any of the ultra-light gear available to us today. Any backpacker or canoe enthusiast will find this interesting, I think.

Another Garbled-English Post…

Saturday, November 21st, 2009

Oh, Dear Reader, you know these get me giggling! This garbled-English post is especially maddening because you can tell it would be useful if it were comprehensible. AND it’s accompanied by this photo, full of mystery objects:

whattobring_1

I see a sleeping bag (I think) and tent stakes, a tripod, and what looks like a bowl of sugar… what fun!

I Just Got My First Negative Comment

Tuesday, November 10th, 2009

(on “Sheek: Camping, Anyone?”) and at first my only thought was, “Yea, somebody read one of my posts today!” But then I apologized for possibly making the person feel bad, because I certainly didn’t intend that.

Anyway, someone read my blog today!

“All About Traveling: Camping Makes the Weekend Perfect”

Tuesday, November 10th, 2009

Am I mean? I laugh so hard at these Babel-Fished posts that I cry. As you know, Dear Reader, I am a teacher, and I do so love correct grammar and word usage…

Get a load of this:

“Do you accept a weekend after annihilation to do or a weekend back you don’t appetite to do anything? I apperceive what I’d do. I would backpack up the barter and arch for the woods. Sitting by a affected blaze with your admired bodies solves abounding problems, so you shouldn’t delay too continued amid fires. My admired affair to do on a weekend is to camp. Are you attractive for an accessible way to camp? How about car camping? I adulation it!”

Well, if I were to “adulation” any sort of camping these days, it would be car camping, so I think I can agree with the enthusiasm here, if nothing else. Moreover, I do try not to “delay too continued amid fires.” I have a general policy about that sort of thing.

Read the whole lovely mess at this link.

For the Camper Who Has Everything…

campingtool

These would make interesting gifts this holiday season, hmmm? I tried to source them, and had no luck. I found similar ones here and here, but they aren’t as nicely done. Anybody out there know where to get these?

“Outdoor Camping vs. Our Environment”

Saturday, November 7th, 2009

In this thought-provoking article, the author examines the impact on camping that the population explosion in her home state of Utah has had. With more people, more of those people camping, and growing concern for the environment, she has seen places where she has camped in the past closed as wildlife areas. She calls for a balance between stewarding the natural environment and enjoying interacting with it. “By allowing us to see our beautiful country,” Ms. Christiansen asks, “won’t we learn to respect it more? Somehow there needs to be a balance between the environment and us.”

National Blog Posting Month

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

In the spirit of National Blog Posting Month, or “NaBloPoMo” as it’s abbreviated on Twitter, I will be posting regularly this November, although much of the country seems to have packed their camping gear away post-Labor Day. There was quite a spate of teens and twenty-somethings attempting their own Blair Witch experiences on Halloween weekend, but being as I don’t endorse wild, booze-soaked camp outs (safety first, leave no trace, and all that), I had no intention of reviewing any of those blog posts.

So, Dear Reader, I’ll be dipping into my bookmarks and even taking you halfway around the world to Oz and New Zealand, where it’s summer now, as well as scaring up what quality posts I can find here at home– some of which may involve camping in the snow, a foreign concept to this south easterner! In the meantime, our metaphorical door is always open here in balmy South Carolina, in case any of you want to take a little road trip to get some comfortable camping in this winter…

Yours,

Jean B. in SC
