“Dreaming of Dangerous Avalanches” by Klaus M. Auen

avalanches

I ran across this picture on Flickr and loved it, because the man looks like he’s sleeping so peacefully, yet the pic’s title is, “Dreaming of Dangerous Avalanches.” I had to know the story behind it, so I Flickr-mailed Klaus M. Auen, and this is what he said: “At this moment I was dreaming of a big serac avalanche (ice towers collapsed) just two hours before. That was really scary. We were able to escape by running like Carl Lewis, just a few seconds before it would catch us….”

Talk about some well-deserved rest!

If you read German, you’re in luck, because Klaus has written a book about the experience and how it changed his life, entitled Dem Himmel nah.

The Best Times of Day for Outdoor Photography

Saturday, June 6th, 2009

Do you know the best times of day for outdoor photography? Early morning and late afternoon, because shadows are softest then and colors are at their warmest. Try to avoid high noon, because that’s when shadowing will be most acute and your photos will be most harshly lit. Of course, if an event you’re trying to capture is taking place at noon, you’re pretty well stuck photographing at that time– so take full advantage of your camera’s screen viewer and move around so you can make sure there aren’t shadows right on your subject’s face, for example.

Taking photos of your camp out at night? Try turning the flash off and using the ambient light of the campfire or lanterns. The flash distorts colors and can lead to the same harsh look you’d get at noon.

Consumer Reports’ Point and Shoot Digital Camera Picks

Saturday, June 6th, 2009

I’m ready to upgrade my digital camera, so I went ahead and joined Consumer Reports so I could see what they recommend. Just in case anybody out there would like to know, without the expense of subscribing to Consumer Reports, their top picks were all Canons. In the under $125.00 category, kudos went to the Canon PowerShot A590 IS, although I couldn’t find it online for under that amount! By the way, on Amazon.com (click on the picture below), it rates a 4.5 out of five stars with 819 reviews, which is an astounding endorsement.

The Canon PowerShot G10 ($450.00) was their pick for flexible editing and compostion, and the Canon PowerShot SX10 IS ($350.00) won in the long zoom category. So, if you’re in the market for a new digital camera, you might want to check these Canon models out. I am not trying to be Consumer Reports here, so if you want to know why these were head of their classes, subscribe– you can do so for a month for about $5.00, then unsubscribe before you’re billed for the next month. (By the way, I’m a big fan of the organization and am also not trying to discourage subscribing long-term, just giving a little bit of info.)

The other two cameras listed and many accessories can also be found on Amazon.Com.
