The Clymb

Saturday, November 7th, 2009

There’s an exciting new opportunity out there for outdoor enthusiasts called The Clymb. It is a members-only site that I’ll let the owner tell you about by quoting from an email he sent me:

“We’ve created a private sale network for an amazing array of outdoor, bike and ski/snow brands. Our deal is you accept our free invitation to join and we give you insider prices, usually 50-70% off retail, on gear from one of our partner brands. We’ll have a new brand each week, and the product will be available for 3 days or until it is sold out.  Also we recently announced that we have a carbon offset shipping feature.”

For an invitation to join, click here: http://bit.ly/2gF6An. I’m excited to be a member and hope that The Clymb has a long, profitable presence on the web!

A Plea for Donations to KOA Care Camps

Saturday, September 12th, 2009

Is this begging? I feel more dignified than that, but it may be, and I’m not too proud to do so. KOA Care Camps has a fantastic program for children with life-altering (and THREATENING) cancer, and Mr. Richard O’Russa of Rome Industries has been incredibly generous by donating the dozen pie irons and pie iron cookbooks we’re raffling off, so if I have to beg to get a response, so be it.

In case you’re unfamiliar with them, this is a pie iron:

1705lg

They’re a time-honored way to cook over the coals, my friends, and you can make a tremendous variety of good things in them, as the cookbooks clearly demonstrate. They retail for anywhere from $10.95-$16.95, so even if you’re cconcentrating on what you could get for your $5.00, it’s at least half off (plus there’s the cookbook).

But I encourage you to think of yourself in this, because the joy you’ll get from knowing you’ve helped to brighten the hideous daily grind of a pediatric cancer patient is a tremendous return on your $5.00, whether you win one of the raffled sets or not. For the price of a latte you could spred a little joy in the world, so what are you waiting for? Click on “KOA Care Camps” on the horizontal menu bar above, enter your first name and email address so we can get in touch with you if you win, and you’ll be directed to KOA Care Camps’ pay pal button.

And thank you, from the bottom of my heart.

Yours,

C.A.M.P. at Kings Canyon National Park

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

This seems awfully generous. If you’re a newbie in the area, here’s your chance to learn how to set that tent up, start a fire, do some camp cooking, etc., etc. If not, and it sounds like a good idea, why not print this out and take it to your local National or State Parks office and see if they could put something similar together?

Family Tent Camping Group on Ning

Monday, July 27th, 2009

We have a social network all our own on Ning, called Family Tent Campers (really put a lot of imagination into that, huh?). Come join up– you can post camping pics and videos there, post about your camping adventures, and have your own camping blog. Also, once we have decent membership, there’ll be forums, including ratings on campgrounds, camping-themed scrapbooking (with swaps), campfire cuisine, and whatever else people want. It’ll take awhile to get established, naturally– but that’ll never happen without YOUR participation! We need YOU and your enthusiasm to get the ball rolling!!

I can’t wait to meet you…

A Cool Nature Study Idea from Green Hour

Monday, July 27th, 2009

The National Wildlife Federation’s Green Hour has come up with yet another easy, enjoyable idea that could be adapted to a family tent camping trip with no problem. Called “The Bugliest Scavenger Hunt Ever!”, this is what it sounds like– a scavenger hunt to find the biggest bug, the prettiest bug, etc., etc. No one has to be an entomologist to participate; even the youngest campers could enjoy this, while older children with more knowledge could distinguish between arachnids and insects, for example.

This would also be a great time to teach about the dangers of everybody’s favorite arachnid, the ubiquitous tick, and for that reason, I would suggest going on this hunt in long pants, a long-sleeved shirt, and shoes and socks, if possible. Certainly follow the activity up with a fun game of mutual “Tick Inspection,” especially if stifling heat keeps everyone in shorts and flip-flops.

Don’t forget the bug viewing jars! You could bring specimens back to the picnic table for some quiet drawing time. These inexpensive examples feature a grid on the bottom, so if you’re drawing on graph paper you can easily make your drawing life-sized, and a magnifying top (and air holes, of course). We have gotten years of enjoyment out of ours; kids and adults alike appreciate the ability to really examine a bug without any chance of it examining you right back! Check them out at Amazon.Com:

Green Hour Idea: “Camping and Scavenger Hunt”

Boondocking.Org

Thursday, July 16th, 2009

I thought some of you who are into primitive camping might like to know about this website, which is a database of GPS coordinates for free camping areas. You can also add your favorite areas to the database, as long as they are completely free. When my husband gets home from work, I’m going to have him include some of our favorites (I don’t do the GPS thing– that’s his bag).

We have always enjoyed the seclusion we generally find at free sites, and don’t really miss things like showers, laundry rooms, etc., which I WOULD look (and pay) for periodically on one of the long camping jaunts I’m dreaming up. But for the weekenders we usually manage, free is right in line with our budget and primitive is cool with us!

Reserve America’s Top 100 Family Campgrounds

Thursday, July 16th, 2009

I don’t know how many of you get this information, and I didn’t want anyone to miss it, so here is a list of America’s Top 100 Family Campgrounds, chosen by Reserve America’s Camping Club “based on criteria requested by family campers including park amenities, beautiful outdoor scenery, and educational facilities. The criteria included parks that offer hot showers, laundry facilities, hiking trails, family beaches, radio – free zones, visitor centers, educational programs, children’s events, and that are located within 100 miles of a metro location.”

Enjoy!

(BTW, Santee State Park-Santee, SC is a hop, skip, and a jump from my house, so if you ever stay there, email me and we can meet in person!)

RotiSir & KOA’s Care Camps Reminder

Monday, July 6th, 2009

The RotiSir portable rotisserie and hibachi grill– perfect for camping trips!– is going to be marketed at $100.00 plus $15.00 S&H, but if you buy right now, before the first shipment of them hits the U.S., you’ll get it for only $59.95 plus $15.00 S&H.

That’s right– prepaid preorders amount to only $74.95 versus $115.00, a savings of $40.05! The manufacturer gave me plenty of leeway to mark these up so I could profit from them, but I’m not going to make a dime– my goal is to sell twenty, because at that point I’ll be given one for free which I’ll raffle off to benefit KOA’s Care Camps for children with cancer.

There’s a video and more information about these rotisseries in the Shopping section of this site. Firefox users, roll your mouse over “Shopping,”  then “Camping Accessories,” then “Cooking & Eating,” and you’ll see the RotiSir page in the drop-down menu; I.E. users, for some reason the drop-down menu doesn’t work smoothly, so click on “Shopping” and wait for a second to get it, then click through the above-mentioned categories. You’ll see the “RotiSir” option and can buy securely through PayPal on that page.

I’m really excited about this, Dear Reader! I’ve known since I started this website that I wanted to arrange some way to give to a camping-related charity, and this is it (hopefully the first campaign of many). You’ll wind up with the coolest new addition to your camping kitchen out there, and you’ll be participating in a great cause in the process.

I can already smell the roast I’m going to cook when I get mine… smell it? Isn’t that delicious? Yum…
