“Confused and Clumsy: Camping Trip”

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

I can’t be 100% sure this trip involved tents, which purists such as myself consider inherent in the term “camping,” but I enjoyed the post very much, whether it did or not. It’s well-written and entertaining, so check it out here.

“Eva’s Adventures: Bears, Peeing My Pants, and Summer Camping”

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

This is the tale of a sleepless night camping for two young ladies waaay out in the wilderness. “I spent the whole night imagining the different ways I would die, the author writes, “and what the headline would read: STUPID GIRLS CAMP IN WOODS or CAMPING EXPERIENCE TURNS TRAGIC.”

Things almost always look better in the morning.

“Janet Is Hungry: Camping Chocolate Orange Cakes”

Campfire orange cakes

Okay, say it with me: “Yum!” Go here for complete instructions on how to accomplish this. There’s only one thing I would add– you could combine all the cake ingredients at home, put them in a ziploc bag, and pop it in the cooler for fewer steps at your campsite.

“Words @ Random: Camping”

This is one of those camping posts so complete in photos and text that you can feel you were there. Great for living vicariously!

Look at this neat spot for setting up your tents– after clearing plenty of rocks, I bet. (Photo by Shawna Skirrow.)

I had to include this picture of the tent, Dear Reader– you know I’m a Tentaholic!

This is a post about an aunt’s attempt to provide her nephew with the best sleepover ever, and she succeeded. To make any event super-special, just pop the tent up in the backyard– that’s my motto!

“East Coast F’Lakers: Nifty Ideas: Camping Part 1″

Monday, September 28th, 2009

In this post, Yvonne talks about items that make her camping kitchen work for her, and her ideas are great for car campers (such as myself). This is the first of three similar posts, so be sure to click on “newer post” when you’re done reading this one.

Guest Blog Post by Rebecca, Scavenger Hunt Guru

Monday, September 28th, 2009

We are lucky this morning to have this guest blog post by Rebecca of  http://www.scavenger-hunt-guru.com.

Are you brainstorming up fun ideas for your next camping trip? Why not consider a scavenger hunt? They are easy to organize and tons of fun for all ages.

Scavenger hunts are experiential by nature. Kids learn in a hands on fashion as they explore the world around them, and we all know that the more hands-on the learning, the more the kids learn and remember. Hunts can be done on the trail, on the beach, and even as cool car games for the road trip to your campground.

To set up your hunt, simply print out a list of clues and let them go! It’s fun to add a fun quote or graphics to the scavenger hunt list, but not entirely necessary. It just depends on how creative you are feeling.

Here are a few outdoor scavenger hunts for you to try:

Camping Games: a fun camping scavenger hunt.
Hiking Activities: things to hung for on the trail.
Beach Scavenger Hunt: fun in the sand.
Beach Activity: a beach scavenger hunt with a twist.
Nature Scavenger Hunt: to build awareness.
Photography Game: check out the world from behind the camera lens.

The important thing is to be prepared, have fun with it and end while the kids are still wanting more. Try doing one scavenger hunt a week with your kids. They’ll love it!!! Scavenger Hunt Guru has a comprehensive collection of hunts to get you started.

If you are feeling the urge to create your own scavenger hunt adventure, be sure to check out the list of scavenger hunt ideas already brainstormed and broken down by location: indoor, outdoor, classroom and crazy! Simply pick and choose what you want to put on your list.

Happy camping and happy hunting!!!

“Patchwork Reflections: Holiday Camping”

Monday, September 28th, 2009

Crisp, beautiful photos accompany the brief text here about  a camping trip to Unicoi State Park in northwest Georgia. I’ve stayed there, too, although many years ago, and enjoyed every second of it, including a side trip to the tourist trap of Helen, GA (years ago the town decided to turn itself into a Bavarian village to attract traffic, and it’s worked). Anna Ruby Falls are gorgeous, and worth the hike, and the lake is serene. I enjoyed this post and the memories it brought back!

“Principal’s Page: Camping?”

Saturday, September 26th, 2009

This guy complains like he’s been sentenced to hard time about camping in a camper– what would he think of a tent? I also think it’s scandalous that an educator apparently can’t compose a paragraph, but that’s the teacher in me coming to the fore.

Anyway, I laughed at his post AND got to feel superior at the same time. Fun!

“OC Register: Happy Camper Faces His Fear of the Wilderness”

Saturday, September 26th, 2009

I felt sorry for this guy after reading the comments on his article. Although he did get good advice re his dark clothing, most were disparaging because he car-camped instead of going straight for back country glory. I say, welcome to camping, Dude! You can backpack some other time.
